A record 84 para athletes will represent India at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, scheduled from August 28 to September 8.
India will compete in 12 disciplines at the Paris Games, up from nine at Tokyo 2020.
The Indian team will be led by javelin thrower Sumit Antil and shooter Avani Lekhara, both gold medalists from the Tokyo Paralympics. Antil holds the world record with a throw of 73.29 meters, while Lekhara is India’s first female gold medalist at the Paralympic Games.
High jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu, a two-time Paralympic medalist, won gold at Rio 2016 and silver at Tokyo 2020.
Para table tennis player Bhavina Patel and archer Harvinder Singh, who each secured India's first Paralympic medal in their respective sports, will be aiming for a second medal in Paris.
Tokyo 2020 marked India's most successful Paralympic Games to date, with the country achieving a total of 19 medals: five gold, eight silver, and six bronze.
Indian para athletes will be competing in three new sports at Paris 2024: para cycling, para rowing, and blind judo.
Arshad Shaik and Jyoti Gaderiya will represent India in para cycling, with Shaik competing in the men’s C2 events and Gaderiya in the women’s C2 events.
In blind judo, Kapil Parmar will compete in the men’s 60kg J1 category, while Kokila will compete in the women’s 48kg J2 category. In para rowing, Anita and K. Narayana will compete in the PR3 mixed doubles sculls.
India has already achieved notable successes at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Avani Lekhara became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympics, successfully defending her title in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event with a world record score. Mona Agarwal also won bronze, marking India’s first double podium finish in a single event at the Paralympics.
Armless archer Sheetal Devi briefly held the world record in the ranking round before finishing second. Devi, along with Rakesh Kumar, set a world record in the compound mixed team qualification event.
Preethi Pal won bronze in the women’s 100m T35 race with a personal best time, marking India’s first medal in a track event at the Paralympics.
So far, India has won five medals at Paris 2024: one gold, one silver, and three bronze.
