With Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcarraza out of the running, the U.S. Open draw is now wide open.
The surprising upsets have now opened up the final major tournament of the year to a range of American contenders
For the second consecutive night, a presumed favorite for the U.S. Open took the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium—and, for the second time, that favorite was defeated, throwing the men's tournament wide open.
Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, was defeated by Australian Alexei Porphyrin in the third round on Friday—6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4—just one day after Carlos Alcatraz's surprising loss on the same court. For the first time since 2017, the 37-year-old Serbian, who holds the record for most major tournament victories among men, will not be adding to his tally this season.
