Nottingham Forest's head coach, Nuno Espírito Santo, will face his former team, Wolverhampton Wanderers, at the City Ground for a Premier League clash on Saturday afternoon.

Last season, the teams were evenly matched, with both encounters ending in draws. Their most thrilling match was a 2-2 stalemate at the City Ground in April.

Match preview

After drawing 1-1 with Bournemouth on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, Nottingham Forest secured their first three points with a narrow 1-0 win over Southampton last Saturday, thanks to a second-half goal from Morgan Gibbs-White.

However, Forest's progress in the EFL Cup was halted in the second round. They were eliminated after a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to Newcastle United on Wednesday, following a 1-1 draw at the City Ground. Summer signing Jota Silva scored a stunning volley on his full debut to equalize Joe Willock's early goal, but missed penalties from Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi proved decisive in the shootout.

Despite this setback, Nuno Espírito Santo is encouraged by his team's resilience against Newcastle and is focused on maintaining their unbeaten Premier League run. The last time Forest went unbeaten in their opening three top-flight games was in the 1995-96 season, when they finished in ninth place.

Forest have faced difficulties against Wolverhampton Wanderers recently, having won only one of their last 11 league encounters with them. That solitary victory came in January 2018, a 2-0 win at Molineux when both teams were in the Championship.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of five Premier League teams yet to earn a point this season, having lost their first two matches against Arsenal and Chelsea. Their most recent game saw them suffer a heavy 6-2 defeat to Chelsea at home.

In a chaotic first half, Wolves' Matheus Cunha and new signing Jorgen Strand Larsen leveled the score after goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer. However, defensive errors plagued them in the second half, allowing Noni Madueke to score a 14-minute hat-trick and Joao Felix to add another goal, completing the rout for Chelsea.

Since the start of the 2023-24 season, Wolves have endured more Premier League defeats than any other team, excluding relegated clubs, with a total of 20 losses. Additionally, they have won only one of their 19 top-flight matches in August since their promotion in 2019 (D8 L10).

Gary O'Neil was looking for a reaction from his team in Wednesday's EFL Cup second-round match against Burnley. After making 10 changes, Wolves delivered with a 2-0 victory, thanks to a brace from Goncalo Guedes, which secured a third-round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Despite their poor form in the Premier League, Wolves have an impressive record against Nottingham Forest in their last six away meetings, remaining unbeaten with three wins and three draws.
